First Time Dog Owner - Welcoming Home a New Pet

First Time Dog Owner - Welcoming Home a New Pet

Congratulations! You’ve just adopted a new pet! As a first time dog owner, a lot of questions might be popping up in your mind. Like what does the dog or puppy need, if your home is safe or when to take them to the vet.The key to helping your new pet adjust to their new home is to be prepared and patient. It can take anywhere from two days up to two months for you and your new pet to become adjusted to each other and your family. As a first time dog owner patience is very important!

First Time Dog Owner Tips

Here are some tips to get started on the right foot.

  1. Designate a specific area for your new pet. This could be their room or just an area in your house. Place their food and water dishes in this area, as well as any toys that are theirs. If you’ve adopted a kitten/cat place their litter box in this area too. When you bring them home, immediately put them in this area. They will learn that this is their spot and that they can be comfortable here.
  2. Pet-proof your home BEFORE you bring them home. Make sure all electrical cords are secure and put up out of reach of a paw. Clean up anything on the floor they might want to pick up and play with.
  3. Be prepared for housetraining. Assume that your new pet is not house trained. Be patient when training them on how to become house trained.
  4. For the first few days try to keep the house environment quiet. Your new pet will be adjusting to its new place for a few days. Remain calm and quiet around your pet, limiting too much excitement. Give them a chance to settle in before having neighbors and family over to see the new pet.
